POLITICS OF CLIMATE CRISIS GOVERNING ANIMALITY, POVERTY, AND RESILIENCE

Course Objectives:

By the end of the class, students will be able to (1) demonstrate familiarity with contemporary challenges posed by global climate crisis; (2) assess different aspects of the politics of climate crisis, politics of resilience and climate justice, (3) show ability to write short essays on different aspects of the topic, and (4) express arguments clearly and concisely. During the learning process, students will (5) both work in collaborative projects in a group of three or four, and take individual responsibility to conduct literature review and final project on the topic they choose.

 

Course Content:

This class explores the relationship between global climate crisis, governance of the vulnerable groups all across the world, both humans and non-humans. It encourages students to become more reflective about the anthropogenic sources of climate change, and to be more cognizant about the uneven distribution of its effects and consequences both across the human and animal worlds. It also aims at connecting the growing field of animal studies with the political analysis of the climate crisis. At the end of this course, students should be able to: present and analyse major arguments related to climate change; as well as to critically discuss its vital challenges not only for the growing populations of the urban poor, but also for animals.
