HST 102 HISTORY OF MODERN TURKEY II

Course Description:
This course focuses on the recent history of Turkey from the early Republican period to today in its political, social, economic, and cultural aspects. The course analyzes Turkey, considering global developments and general trends. In this regard, transformations such as the shift from a single-party system to a multi-party system, from the Cold War to the new global world, and their consequences will be discussed with different dimensions, from internal politics to external politics, from socio-economic structures to ideological movements. The modules explain the transformations both at the state and society levels.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students are expected to:

  • identify and understand the major events in the history of modern Turkey,
  • compare different perspectives about the major issues of the history of modern Turkey,
  • critically evaluate and discuss various sources, whether archival, visual, or fictional,
  • think about how history of Turkey is understood and represented,
  • locate the history of modern Turkey in a global context,
  • discover the connections between personal experience and political and social transformations in Turkey.

*Compulsory for all departments (Second year students)
