HISTORY OF SOCCER

Course Objectives: This course has two main objectives: To examine the history of soccer, the most popular sport of our time, and to look at football in the light of various disciplines. It can be said that soccer is one of the most important means to understand our age. Because, indeed, soccer is met with great interest and love almost all over the world. More importantly, the reasons for this interest and love can differ significantly from person to person and from society to society. In our lesson, we will try to think about soccer and its history through these differences.

Course Content: The most popular sport today is soccer. Soccer, which was invented in England in the 19th century, is a sport that is widely known, loved and increasingly industrialized all over the world since the second half of the 20th century. Soccer is indeed, as the saying goes, “never just soccer”. In this course, we will primarily focus on the history of this sport from its invention to the present day. At the same time, we will refer to readings on soccer from various fields, especially economics, politics and even philosophy. Also, in the last few weeks of the semester, we will touch on the birth of soccer in Turkey and the dynamics of its evolution up to present in our country.
