Course Objectives: The course aims at providing an understanding on the characteristics of an Ottoman city with its governance, social composition, societal life, economic circumstances, ethnic composition, gender relations and its culture. It also aims to reveal the transformation of the city with all its characteristics throughout the centuries. Especially, the aim is to grasp the change that occurred in the 19th century when the Ottoman Empire had been majorly influenced by the developments in Europe. Course Content: This course is about the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire, more specifically the course focuses on the urban history of Ottoman Istanbul from 15th to 20th century, and it deals with the social, economic and cultural life of the city and the relation between the palace and the populace in the Ottoman capital.
