ISTANBUL ON THE MOVE EXPLORING THE CITY THROUGH ART AND DESIGN

11 Şubat 2024

Course Objectives: This course aims to delve into Istanbul as a multifaceted and dynamic node where various flows (of people, things, capital, and information), practices, and narratives intersect. It focuses on the interconnectedness of everyday life, design, and art in the urban context, and how we can reframe our lenses through which we understand cities. We will learn from the city by walking, listening, recording, mapping, and sketching it, and examine the roles of design, art, and cultural institutions in shaping the urban environment at different scales. Students will be able to develop both the fundamental theoretical and practical aspects of creative research with a wide range of expressions, including but not limited to objects, installations, texts, performances, video, audio, and new media.

Course Content: Throughout the semester, there will be field trips to exhibitions, museums, studios, and various sites in Istanbul, followed by discussion sessions. Our methods of learning will include walking, listening, recording, storytelling, mapping, sketching, and performance. We will have workshops for hands-on learning and sharing ideas. Additionally, there will be seminars that present contemporary debates and creative research related to Istanbul
